Toppers on the water

Our junior sailing activities are designed to introduce our younger members aged from about 8 upwards to the sport, on our fleet dinghies ( 2 RS Visions, 2 Laser Picos and 9 Toppers ).  The club  restarted dinghy activities in the spring of 2013 and since then the junior programme programme has really flourished.  Last year we were successful in a Sport England Bid and the investment in a dedicated Ribeye safety boat, called Cleo, has allowed us to grow our Junior squad to 24.  We also bought a Topper road trailer and our Junior leads are thinking through which of the local regattas the more competent juniors will compete in. In addition to the brilliant Port of Dartmouth junior regatta of course.
All our Junior sessions are run by a Senior Instructor, with volunteers providing safety boat cover and a First Aider is at every session. So you can be sure that safety, as well as fun, is at the top of our agenda. Each year we undergo a rigorous inspection by the RYA to ensure that we continue to meet their high standards for safety and training.
Every year we run the hugely popular weekly SPLASH! dinghy sailing sessions during the summer term on Saturdays.  This is open to members between the ages of 8 and 16 and provides a great chance for our juniors to either learn the sport or practice their skills. Our chief instructor keeps the emphasis on learning and fun but Splash! sessions can also lead to an RYA stage 1 or 2 qualification. Splash 2019 is already underway but we will be running some further sessions later in the summer. Keep an eye on our club emails for details.
This year will sees the first DYC run dinghy instructor course and we wish our  4 teenage Assistant Instructors good luck as they aim to qualify as Dinghy Instructors.  Also, new this year is an Autumn series of junior racing, all competing for the Harbord Cup and a prize of £50.
Helping family members sail together is a DYC priority.  Our annual Family Sailing Week, which is really more of a water bourne activity week involving raft building and treasure hunts  is run jointly with Dittisham Sailing Club and is very popular with parents and children alike and with a limited number of places available it is wise to book early.
This year we have introduced a series of Thursday evening senior instructor led sessions for juniors, adults or families,  aimed at improving their skills / confidence to a standard which enables them take part in the Club's Tuesday evening fun sails.
There's such a lot going on and if you'd like any more information just drop an email to Christine Phillips on training@dartmouthyachtclub.co.uk
